A very interesting presentation from the perspective of adult literary students in in Bill Fecteau's class at Highbridge Community Life Center in Bronx, NY.
AdesolaAdedeke came to NY from Nigeria two years ago. Lisa Smith has lived her whole life in NYC. Both spoke on how illiteracy has caused them to be isolated and fearful and has affected their families, their ability to be employed, their self esteem and their participation in community activities.
They were very clear on the positive effect in all these areas of their improvement in literacy. They emphasized the effect of their modeling on their children's learning.
Ed Phelan and Bill Fecteau described the literary program at Highbridge and pointed out that Lasallian Brothers and their partners were recognized for their world wide literacy activities by the United Nations award in 1990.
